Drive Your Own Development

It is imperative that individuals stand up for themselves in the workplace, ensure they are being compensated and developed equitably in their job roles.  When you are in a position and you don’t have the opportunity to develop, through attending external learning events, internal training, working on cross functional teams or engaging in stretch assignments, it’s time to speak up.

If you’re not interested in moving up the career ladder, there are still opportunities to grow and learn.  Take your manager aside and have an open dialogue about your interest in developing in your current position.

Managers, please, take these conversations seriously and don’t use “budget” or other constraints as an excuse.  Task your employee on finding a free training course or you can identify a cross functional project that will develop key competencies. Organizations need to know, they will only get out what they put into their staff.  It takes effort to grow staff and build high performing teams.

“The only thing worse than training your employees and having them leave, is not training them and having them stay” – Henry Ford
